Background of the Study
Indigenous language literacy programs have become a focal point in efforts to enhance adult education in Sagamu Local Government Area. The integration of native language instruction in literacy initiatives is posited to improve comprehension, retention, and cultural engagement among adult learners (Adeyemi, 2023). This study explores how such programs empower adults by providing learning in their mother tongue, thereby reducing the language barrier often encountered in formal education. Literacy programs that incorporate indigenous languages foster not only educational attainment but also cultural pride and community cohesion (Balogun, 2024). Furthermore, these initiatives are seen as a counterbalance to the dominance of colonial languages that may impede adult learning. By focusing on indigenous literacy, the study underscores the need for educational reforms that respect and incorporate cultural diversity. The historical neglect of local languages in education is being rectified by community-based programs that emphasize language as a medium of instruction and empowerment (Folarin, 2023). Consequently, this research situates itself within a broader dialogue on inclusive education and cultural preservation, examining both the benefits and challenges of implementing indigenous literacy programs in adult education (Olawale, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of indigenous language literacy programs, adult education in Sagamu faces challenges such as inadequate resources, limited program outreach, and policy constraints. These issues hinder the full potential of literacy programs in fostering educational development and cultural retention (Akinola, 2023).

To identify challenges hindering program implementation.
To propose strategies for enhancing the programs’ outreach and effectiveness.
